Privacy Policy

1. Information We Collect

When you create an account on CareerLookAI, we collect the following information:

  • Account information — first name, last name, email address, birth month and year, and education level provided at registration
  • Saved careers — careers you choose to save to your account
  • Job search queries — search terms entered in the Jobs Portal (processed via JSearch/RapidAPI)
  • Career submissions — if you submit a career via the Career Explorer, we store the career name and a rate-limiting identifier. We do not store your full IP address.
  • AI chat conversations — messages sent to our AI counselor are processed by Anthropic's Claude API. We do not permanently store your chat messages. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy for how they handle API data.
  • How you found us. If you arrived from one of our advertisements or a marked link, we store which campaign it was on your account — the advertising source, medium, campaign and creative, plus the date. This is campaign information, not information about you: it contains no identifier for you or for the click, and it is recorded once when the account is created and never updated afterwards.
  • ZIP code (optional). If you choose to provide one, we use it only to show schools and opportunities near you. It is never required, you can remove it at any time from your dashboard, and leaving it blank does not limit any other feature.
  • Google account information (if you sign in with Google). If you choose “Sign in with Google” rather than creating a password, Google shares your name, your email address and whether Google has verified it, a link to your Google profile photo, and a Google account identifier that lets us recognise you when you return. We request only Google’s basic profile and email permissions, so we receive nothing else from your Google account — no contacts, no calendar, no Drive files, and no access to any other Google service. This information is stored in our Supabase authentication database on the same terms as the account information above, is used only to sign you in and to greet you by name, and is never sold or shared with advertisers. You can revoke our access at any time from your Google account permissions page, and you can delete your account and its data as described in section 10.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and personalize our career guidance services
  • To maintain your saved careers and account preferences
  • To process job searches on your behalf
  • To communicate with you about your account
  • To improve our platform and user experience

3. Data Storage & Security

Your account data is stored securely using Supabase (PostgreSQL database hosted in the United States). Authentication is handled by Supabase Auth with industry-standard encryption. We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data, but no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.

4. Third-Party Services

We use trusted third-party services to power features on this site. These services may receive limited data necessary to perform their function — for example, your search terms are sent to our job search provider when you use the Jobs Portal, and your chat messages are processed by our AI provider. We do not sell your personal data to any third party, and we only share data with third parties to the extent necessary to provide our services.

Our key service providers include: Supabase (account data storage and authentication), Anthropic (AI guidance chat), RapidAPI/JSearch (job listings), OpenStreetMap/Nominatim (location search), Stripe (payment processing), Resend (transactional email), and Google (fonts, advertising services, and sign-in authentication if you choose it). Each provider maintains their own privacy policy governing their data practices.

5. Advertising & Third-Party Cookies

We display advertisements on this site through third-party advertising networks, which may include Google AdSense and Media.net (the Yahoo/Bing contextual advertising network). These advertising partners may use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies to collect information about your visits to this and other websites in order to display advertisements — including interest-based advertising tailored to your browsing activity.

  • Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites on the Internet. You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings.
  • Media.net and other ad partners may similarly use cookies for contextual and interest-based ad serving, subject to their own privacy policies.
  • You can opt out of many third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info/choices or optout.networkadvertising.org.
  • Where required by law, we request your consent before enabling advertising cookies, and you may decline via our cookie banner. Declining consent limits ads to non-personalized serving.

Advertising helps keep CareerLookAI free to use. We do not control the content of third-party advertisements, and the appearance of an ad does not constitute our endorsement of the advertised product or service.

6. Advertising Measurement & Conversion Tracking

We advertise CareerLookAI on external platforms, and we measure whether those advertisements are effective. To do this we use conversion tracking technologies from our advertising partners, currently Reddit (the Reddit Pixel and Reddit Conversions API), X (the X Ads pixel and conversions API), and Impact (affiliate link tracking and attribution). These technologies are only activated after you accept cookies via our banner. If you decline, or do not respond to the banner, they are never loaded.

  • What is collected. When enabled, these partners may record that you visited a page on our site, along with standard technical information such as your IP address, browser user agent, screen dimensions, and a randomly generated identifier stored in a cookie. If you arrived from one of our advertisements, a click identifier from that advertisement is also recorded.
  • Signed-in activity and account signups. If you create an account after arriving from one of our advertisements, we report that a signup occurred. In addition, while you are signed in and have accepted cookies, page visits may be reported with an irreversibly hashed (SHA-256) version of your email address and a hashed version of your account identifier, so the advertising platform can match the activity to the advertisement that brought you here. We never transmit your email address in readable form, and we do not transmit your name, birth month and year, phone number, education details, saved careers, roadmaps, or any other profile information. If you are not signed in, or have not accepted cookies, none of this is sent.
  • Hashing is not anonymization. We want to be straightforward about this: a hashed email address is still treated as personal data under privacy laws such as the GDPR and the CPRA. It is a privacy safeguard, not a guarantee of anonymity.
  • Legal characterization. Under certain U.S. state privacy laws, disclosing identifiers to an advertising platform for cross-context behavioral advertising may be considered "sharing" or a "sale" of personal information, even where no money changes hands. You may opt out at any time using the methods described below.
  • How to opt out. Decline cookies on our banner, or clear the gc_cookie_consent value in your browser's site data to be asked again. You may also manage Reddit's advertising settings in your Reddit account privacy settings, and X's in your X privacy settings. Opting out does not affect your ability to use CareerLookAI.

We do not use conversion tracking to build profiles about you for any purpose other than measuring advertising effectiveness, and we do not sell your personal data.

7. Site Analytics (First-Party)

We keep our own record of how the site is used, so we can see which careers and universities people find useful and where our visitors come from. Like the advertising technologies above, this is only active if you accept cookies on our banner. If you decline, or have not yet responded, no identifier is created and no usage is recorded.

  • What we record. The page visited, the career or university name when applicable, whether you arrived from a campaign link, your device category (mobile, tablet, or desktop), and the domain that referred you.
  • How you are identified. By a randomly generated identifier stored in your browser. It is not derived from your name, email, or any other personal detail, and it is not shared with anyone. If you are signed in, the record is also linked to your account.
  • What we deliberately do not store. We do not record your IP address or your browser's user agent string in our analytics, and we store only the domain of a referring site rather than the full referring address.
  • Where it goes. This data stays in our own database and is visible only to site administrators. It is not sold, and it is not shared with advertising networks.
  • How to opt out. Decline cookies on our banner, or clear your browser's site data for CareerLookAI to remove the identifier and be asked again.

8. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting us through our inquiry form. We will process deletion requests within 30 days.

9. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

CareerLookAI is intended for users 13 years of age and older. We collect birth month and year at registration and use it to screen out accounts below that age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has created an account, we will delete the account and associated data immediately. If you believe a child under 13 has registered, please contact us through our inquiry form.

10. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA, and other applicable state laws) including:

  • Right to access the personal data we hold about you
  • Right to correct inaccurate data
  • Right to request deletion of your data
  • Right to data portability
  • Right to opt out of certain data processing

To exercise any of these rights, contact us through our inquiry form.

11. Changes to This Policy

We will update this Privacy Policy as our practices evolve. Material changes will be noted with an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this section. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Cookie Policy

This Cookie Policy explains how CareerLookAI uses cookies and similar browser storage technologies. We keep this simple.

What We Use Cookies For

We use three types of storage on your device:

  • Essential cookies — keep you logged in and remember your preferences. These are required for the site to work and cannot be turned off.
  • Performance cookies — temporarily cache career and university data so pages load faster. No personal information is stored in these caches.
  • Advertising cookies — we do not currently use these. If we introduce advertising (such as Google AdSense) in the future, we will update this policy and ask for your consent before any advertising cookies are set.

Third-Party Services

We use trusted third-party services to power features on this site, including Supabase (account storage), Anthropic (AI chat), Google (fonts, analytics, and advertising), Reddit (advertising measurement), Impact (affiliate link attribution), and job search providers. Each of these services has its own privacy and cookie policy. We encourage you to review them if you have questions about how they handle data.

Advertising and measurement cookies — including those set by Reddit and Impact — are only placed after you accept cookies on our banner. If you decline, or have not yet responded, these scripts are never loaded and no such cookies are set. Cookies that are strictly necessary for the site to function (such as keeping you signed in) are always active, as the site cannot operate without them.

Managing Your Cookies

You can clear cookies and browser storage at any time through your browser settings. Doing so will log you out of your account but will not affect your ability to use the site. You can also decline non-essential cookies via our cookie banner.

Your Consent

By clicking "Accept" on our cookie banner, you consent to the use of cookies as described above. Essential cookies are always active when you use an account — they are required for login functionality to work.
