Overview
Founded in 1900 in Dallas as the University of Dallas Medical Department and later relocated to Houston in 1943, Baylor College of Medicine severed formal ties with Baylor University in 1969 and has since operated as an independent, private institution. It is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the nation for research and primary care, and is a cornerstone institution of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world. BCM is especially known for its contributions to space medicine, genetics, and virology, with faculty and alumni including numerous members of the National Academy of Medicine.
