Overview
Founded in 1855 by abolitionist John G. Fee, Berea College holds the distinction of being the first interracial and coeducational college in the American South. Rooted in a mission of service to Appalachia and social justice, Berea has never charged tuition, instead offering every admitted student a full-tuition scholarship funded by its endowment and requiring participation in a labor program.
