Overview

Founded in 1839 as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute, the university evolved into a normal school for teacher training before becoming a full public university within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. It has long been recognized regionally for its strong teacher preparation programs, and over time expanded into business, health sciences, and the liberal arts. In 2022, Bloomsburg merged with Lock Haven and Mansfield universities to form Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, though the Bloomsburg campus and identity remain prominent.
