Overview

Founded in 1865 as the Baltimore Normal School for the Education of Colored Teachers, Bowie State University is the oldest historically black institution in Maryland and one of the oldest in the nation. Originally established to train freed African Americans as teachers, the university evolved through the 20th century into a comprehensive public institution, joining the University System of Maryland. Today it is recognized for its programs in education, computer science, business, and nursing, and it holds a designation as a University Yielding Excellence and Equity (UYEE) institution committed to closing achievement gaps.
