Overview
Founded originally as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education in 1973, the institution transitioned into the CUNY School of Medicine in 2016, becoming the first public medical school in New York City to award the M.D. degree. It was created explicitly to address physician shortages in underserved urban and rural communities by recruiting students from economically disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds. The school is known for its unique 7-year BS/MD pathway, combining undergraduate study at City College with medical training, emphasizing primary care and community health.
