Overview
Founded in 1867 as the Carrier Seminary of Western Pennsylvania, Clarion University evolved into a state teachers college and later a comprehensive public university within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). It built a solid reputation for teacher preparation, library science, nursing, and business programs, serving primarily first-generation and regional students from Pennsylvania and neighboring states. In 2022, Clarion formally integrated with California University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro University to form Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest), though the Clarion campus retains its identity and programs.
