Clemson University was founded in 1889 through the bequest of Thomas Green Clemson, originally as an agricultural and mechanical college. Over the decades it evolved into a major public research institution, earning Carnegie R1 status for its high level of research activity. Clemson is best known for its strong engineering, business, and science programs, as well as its highly ranked industrial engineering and automotive engineering offerings, including its unique International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).
