Overview

Drake University was founded in 1881 by George T. Carpenter and named after Francis Marion Drake, a Civil War general and Iowa governor who became a major benefactor. Located in Des Moines, Iowa, the university has built a strong reputation for pre-professional and professional education, particularly in law, pharmacy, journalism, and business, while maintaining a liberal arts foundation. Drake is perhaps most widely known nationally for hosting the Drake Relays, one of the oldest and largest collegiate track and field events in the country.
