Overview
Founded in 2002 in Blacksburg, Virginia, through a partnership with Virginia Tech, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine was established to address physician shortages in rural and underserved areas of Virginia, Appalachia, and the broader Southeast. Named after benefactor Edward Via, the college has grown into a multi-campus institution with locations in Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Alabama, becoming one of the largest osteopathic medical school systems in the country. VCOM is known for its strong emphasis on primary care, rural medicine, and community-based clinical training rather than traditional research-intensive academic medicine.
