Erskine College was founded in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, making it South Carolina's oldest four-year private college and one of the oldest colleges in the American South. Named after Reverend Ebenezer Erskine, a founder of the Scottish Secession Church, the institution has maintained a strong denominational identity while offering a rigorous liberal arts curriculum.
