Overview
Green Mountain College was a small private liberal arts college located in Poultney, Vermont, founded in 1834 as Troy Conference Academy. Over its long history it evolved through several identities, eventually becoming a co-educational four-year institution renowned for its pioneering commitment to environmental and sustainability education. GMC was one of the first colleges in the United States to require environmental literacy coursework of all students and was widely recognized for its farm-to-table dining program and renewable energy initiatives, including reaching carbon neutrality in 2011. The college closed permanently in May 2019 due to declining enrollment and financial difficulties.
