Overview
Hofstra University was founded in 1935 as Hofstra College, a small liberal arts institution on the former estate of William S. Mackay, with support from lumber merchants William and Kate Hofstra. It grew rapidly after World War II, achieving university status in 1963, and has since expanded into a comprehensive institution with strong professional programs in law, medicine, business, engineering, and communications. Hofstra is perhaps best known nationally for hosting presidential debates multiple times since 2008, and for the Maurice A. Deane School of Law and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine, operated jointly with Northwell Health.
