Overview
Founded in 1901 as the Academy of Idaho, Idaho State University evolved from a small trade school into a comprehensive public research university headquartered in Pocatello. It gained university status in 1963 and has since become the state's premier institution for health professions education, housing Idaho's only pharmacy school and a major role in training physicians, dentists, and nurses through partnerships and its own colleges. ISU holds an R2 Carnegie classification for high research activity and is particularly recognized for its programs in health sciences, nuclear science and engineering (bolstered by its proximity to Idaho National Laboratory), and rural healthcare delivery.
