Overview
Jarvis Christian College was founded in 1912 by the Woman's Board of Missions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as an institution to educate African Americans in rural Texas. Named after Major James Jarvis and Ida Van Zandt Jarvis, who donated the founding land, the college has grown from a small industrial and agricultural school into a four-year liberal arts institution. It is recognized as one of the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and maintains its founding affiliation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Jarvis is known for its close-knit community, emphasis on character development, and mission of providing access to higher education for underserved and first-generation college students.
