Overview
Lake Superior State University was founded in 1946, originally established as a branch of Michigan College of Mining and Technology to serve returning World War II veterans in Sault Ste. Marie. It became an independent institution in 1970 and has since developed a reputation for practical, career-focused education, particularly in fisheries and wildlife management, engineering technology, and criminal justice. The university is perhaps most widely known outside academic circles for its annual satirical 'Banished Words List,' a media tradition dating back to 1976.
