Overview
Founded in 1882 by Bishop Isaac Lane and the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (now Christian Methodist Episcopal Church), Lane College was established to provide formerly enslaved people and their descendants access to higher education. It grew from a one-room schoolhouse into a fully accredited four-year institution, maintaining strong ties to the CME Church while serving a broader mission of academic and personal development for underserved students. The college is best known for its role in the civil rights movement and its enduring commitment to first-generation and low-income students.
