Overview
Marian University was founded in 1937 by the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, and traces its roots to Immaculate Conception Academy and St. Francis Normal School, earlier Catholic educational institutions in Indiana. Originally a women's college, Marian became coeducational in 1954 and evolved into a comprehensive university, gaining university status in 2009. It is best known today for its Leighton School of Nursing, its rapidly growing Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (founded in 2013, the first medical school in Indianapolis in over a century), and strong programs in business and biology geared toward pre-health professions.
