Overview
Founded in 1975 as a two-year biomedical program at Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine became an independent, degree-granting institution in 1981, awarding its first MD degrees in 1985. It was established to increase the number of Black physicians and other health professionals serving underserved communities, and it has grown into one of the nation's leading historically Black medical institutions, consistently ranked among top producers of primary care physicians and graduates who practice in underserved areas. The school is also a major center for research on health disparities, minority health, HIV/AIDS, and community-based health interventions.
