Overview
Founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute to train men in the ministry, Morgan State University evolved into a comprehensive institution and was designated Maryland's preeminent public urban research university by the state legislature in 2013. Originally private, it became a state college in 1939 and achieved university status in 1975. Morgan State is one of the nation's most productive HBCUs in producing African American graduates who go on to earn doctoral degrees, and it holds Carnegie R2 research classification.
