Overview
Norfolk State University was founded in 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University and became an independent institution in 1969. Located in Norfolk, Virginia, it is one of the largest historically Black universities in the country and holds the distinction of being designated a research institution. NSU is best known for producing significant numbers of African American graduates in STEM fields, particularly physics, engineering, and computer science, and its optical engineering program is nationally recognized.
