Overview
Founded in 1891 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race, North Carolina A&T State University has grown into the largest HBCU in the United States by enrollment. Located in Greensboro, the university gained national prominence as the site of the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins, led by four A&T freshmen who challenged segregation at a local Woolworth's lunch counter. Today it is classified as an R1 doctoral research institution, known especially for engineering, agriculture, and STEM fields, and it consistently leads the nation in awarding engineering degrees to African American students.
