Overview
Founded in 1910 by James E. Shepard, North Carolina Central University was the nation's first public liberal arts institution for African Americans and became a founding member of the University of North Carolina system. Originally the National Religious Training School, it evolved into a comprehensive university known for producing leaders in law, education, business, and public service. NCCU is particularly recognized for its School of Law and its role in advancing educational access and opportunity for Black students throughout the South.
