Overview

The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine was established in 2009 as part of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, becoming the first new allopathic medical school in Texas in over three decades. Named for benefactor Paul L. Foster following a major philanthropic gift, the school emerged from the El Paso campus of Texas Tech's health sciences system to address chronic physician shortages in the El Paso-Juárez border region and broader West Texas area. It has since earned recognition for its innovative curriculum, including an early emphasis on longitudinal patient care and its unique binational and bicultural health perspective given its proximity to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
