Overview

Founded in 1816 as St. Lawrence Academy, SUNY Potsdam is the oldest campus in the State University of New York system, predating SUNY itself by over a century. It gained particular distinction through the Crane School of Music, established in 1886, which remains one of the most respected undergraduate music education programs in the nation. The institution transitioned over the decades from a normal school focused on teacher preparation into a comprehensive liberal arts and sciences college with professional programs.
