Salve Regina University was founded in 1934 by the Sisters of Mercy as a Catholic institution and opened in 1947 on the famed Newport, Rhode Island coastline, occupying several historic Gilded Age mansions along Bellevue Avenue. Rooted in the Mercy tradition of service, compassion, and social justice, the university has grown from a small women's college into a comprehensive coeducational institution offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs.
