Overview
Founded in 1899 as a teacher training school, San Francisco State University has evolved into a comprehensive public university within the California State University system, serving a highly diverse student population. The university gained national attention in 1968-69 as the site of the longest student strike in U.S. history, which led to the creation of the first College of Ethnic Studies in the nation. SF State is well regarded for its programs in cinema, creative writing, broadcast and electronic communication arts, and social work, and it has produced numerous Emmy and Grammy winners among its alumni.
