Overview
Founded in 1926 by William Van Duzer Lawrence and named after his wife, Sarah Lawrence College began as a women's college and became fully coeducational in 1968. It has long been recognized for its progressive, student-centered pedagogy, eschewing traditional grades and majors in favor of individualized study plans developed through one-on-one conferences with faculty mentors known as 'dons.' The college is particularly celebrated for its programs in writing, theatre, dance, and the performing arts, producing generations of influential writers and artists.
