Overview
Founded in 1865 by Henry Martin Tupper, Shaw University holds the distinction of being the first historically Black college or university (HBCU) established in the South, and the first HBCU in the nation to admit women. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Shaw has a storied history of producing educators, ministers, civil rights leaders, and professionals, and it played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement as the founding site of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960.
