Overview
Founded in 1880 in New Orleans and relocated to Baton Rouge in 1914, Southern University is one of the oldest and largest historically Black universities in the United States. It serves as the flagship institution of the Southern University System, the only HBCU system in the nation, and has built a strong reputation in fields such as agriculture, engineering, nursing, and law. The university has produced generations of Black professionals, educators, and leaders, particularly in Louisiana and the broader Gulf South region.
