Overview

Founded in 1897 as a branch normal school for teacher training, Southern Utah University has grown into a comprehensive public university serving the Cedar City region. Over its history it has evolved through several institutional identities before becoming Southern Utah University in 1991, developing a reputation for quality undergraduate teaching, small class sizes, and a supportive campus community. The university is perhaps best known nationally for hosting the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival, which draws visitors from across the country and provides unique experiential learning opportunities for theatre and arts students.
