Overview
Stockton University was founded in 1969 as Richard Stockton State College, part of New Jersey's expansion of public higher education, and was named for Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The university gained university status in 2015 and has grown into a comprehensive institution known for strong programs in marine science, environmental studies, business, health sciences, and criminal justice. Its main campus is set within the Pinelands National Reserve, giving it a distinctive natural setting unusual among public universities.
