Founded in 1866 as the Maryland State Normal School to train teachers, Towson University has grown into the largest comprehensive public university in the Baltimore metropolitan area and the second-largest university in Maryland. Over its history it expanded well beyond teacher education into business, health professions, sciences, and the arts, earning recognition for affordability and strong regional employment outcomes.
