Overview
Founded in 1965 as one of the newer campuses in the University of California system, UC Irvine was established on land donated by the Irvine Company and quickly grew into a major research institution. It has earned a reputation for excellence in the biological sciences, information and computer science, engineering, and criminology, and is home to several Nobel laureates on its faculty, including F. Sherwood Rowland. UCI is classified as an R1 research university and consistently ranks among the top public universities in the United States.
