Overview
Established by Congress in 1972, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is the United States' only federal medical and health sciences university, created to ensure a steady supply of physicians and health professionals for the military and public health services. Operated under the Department of Defense, USUHS trains students who become commissioned officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Public Health Service, with tuition, housing, and a military salary provided in exchange for a service commitment. It is best known for its F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine and Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing, and for pioneering research in military medicine, combat casualty care, tropical medicine, and disaster response.
