Founded in 1965 as Unity College in Maine, the institution began as a small liberal arts college focused on environmental and outdoor education. Over the decades it evolved dramatically, rebranding as Unity Environmental University in 2023 after pioneering a 'hybrid' distributed model that combines online coursework with in-person, hands-on learning experiences at field stations and partner sites.
