Overview
Founded in 1870 as Buchtel College, the University of Akron evolved from a small liberal arts institution affiliated with the Universalist Church into a major public research university. It became a municipal university in 1913 and joined the state university system of Ohio in 1967. UA is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in polymer science and polymer engineering, hosting one of the first and most comprehensive polymer science programs in the world, closely tied to Akron's history as the 'Rubber Capital of the World.'
