Overview
Founded in 1969 as an autonomous campus of the University of Alabama System, UAB grew out of a medical extension program dating to the 1940s and has rapidly become one of the nation's premier academic medical centers. It is consistently ranked among the top recipients of NIH research funding and is renowned for its schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, optometry, and public health, as well as its highly regarded hospital, UAB Medicine.
