Overview
Founded in 1917 as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, the University of Alaska Fairbanks became the flagship campus of the University of Alaska System and is the oldest institution of higher education in the state. UAF earned R1 'very high research activity' designation, distinguishing it for its world-class programs in Arctic and climate science, geophysics, permafrost engineering, volcanology, and space physics. It hosts the Geophysical Institute, International Arctic Research Center, and operates critical infrastructure including the Poker Flat Research Range, the only university-owned rocket launch facility in the world.
