Overview
Founded in 1898 as Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has grown into the second-largest university in Louisiana and a designated R1/R2 research institution. Renamed several times over its history, it became the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1999, reflecting its expanded mission and academic scope.
