Overview
Founded in 1886 as Delaware Conference Academy, UMES has evolved from a small industrial school for Black students into a comprehensive public land-grant institution and one of the nation's historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). It became part of the University System of Maryland and gained land-grant status, enabling it to build robust programs in agriculture, natural resources, and marine sciences. Today it is recognized for its research output relative to its size, particularly in aquaculture, physical therapy, pharmacy, and engineering, punching above its weight for a mid-sized regional university.
