Overview
Founded in 1971, the UMKC School of Medicine was established with an innovative educational model that admits students directly from high school into a combined six-year Bachelor of Arts/Doctor of Medicine program, bypassing the traditional separate undergraduate and medical school pathway. This docent-based model pairs small groups of students with dedicated faculty physician-mentors throughout their entire education, integrating clinical experience from the very first year. The school has become nationally recognized for this distinctive approach and for producing physicians who enter practice, particularly in primary care and underserved areas of Missouri, at a relatively young age.
