Overview
Established in 1974, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia was the state's first public medical school, created to address physician shortages in South Carolina, particularly in primary care and underserved rural areas. In 2019, the school was renamed in honor of Kay and C. Edward Floyd, M.D., following a significant philanthropic gift supporting medical education. The school has built a reputation for community-based medical education, research in areas like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neuroscience, and strong partnerships with Prisma Health hospitals for clinical training.
