Overview
Founded in 1914 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, UTEP evolved through several name changes before becoming a University of Texas System institution in 1967. Located on the U.S.-Mexico border, UTEP has grown into a major research university earning R1 'very high research activity' Carnegie classification while maintaining its historic mission of educational access for the El Paso and Ciudad Juárez region. It is nationally recognized as the leading doctoral research university serving a Mexican American student body.
