Overview

Founded in 1891, the University of Texas Medical Branch is the oldest medical school in Texas and one of the founding institutions of the University of Texas System's health science network. UTMB has built a strong reputation in infectious disease research, particularly through its Galveston National Laboratory, one of only a few facilities in the U.S. equipped to study the world's most dangerous pathogens. The institution has also played a significant historical role in disaster resilience, having rebuilt and modernized extensively after the 1900 Galveston hurricane and Hurricane Ike in 2008.
