Overview
Established in 2013 as part of the creation of UTRGV, the School of Medicine welcomed its charter class in 2016, becoming the first medical school in the historically underserved Rio Grande Valley region. It was founded with a specific mission to address physician shortages and health disparities affecting the predominantly Hispanic, low-income population along the border, emphasizing community-based medical education. The school has quickly built a reputation for its focus on population health, bilingual and bicultural medical training, and partnerships with regional hospitals and clinics.
