Overview
Virginia Commonwealth University was established in 1968 through the merger of the Medical College of Virginia (founded 1838) and the Richmond Professional Institute (founded 1917). This unique history gives VCU a dual identity as both a major academic health center and a comprehensive research university. VCU has grown into one of Virginia's largest universities and is classified as an R1 doctoral research institution, best known for its VCUarts program, which consistently ranks among the top public art and design schools in the nation, as well as its highly regarded health sciences and medical programs.
