Overview
Founded in 2010 as a partnership between Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic, VTCSOM emerged to address physician shortages in southwest Virginia while advancing translational biomedical research. The school gained full LCME accreditation in 2012 and quickly built a reputation for its innovative, case-based curriculum that emphasizes early clinical exposure and self-directed learning rather than traditional lecture-based instruction. It is closely affiliated with the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, giving students unusual access to cutting-edge neuroscience, cancer, and metabolic research.
