Overview
Founded in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society to educate formerly enslaved people, Virginia Union University is one of the nation's oldest historically Black universities. Located on the site of a former slave-trading facility, the university has a deep legacy of transformation and empowerment, and its School of Theology remains one of the most respected Black theological institutions in the country. VUU has produced numerous influential ministers, civil rights leaders, and politicians, including former Richmond mayors and prominent clergy.
