Overview
Voorhees University, founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright with support from the Episcopal Church, is a private historically Black college located in Denmark, South Carolina. Originally established as the Denmark Industrial School to provide vocational and academic training to formerly enslaved people and their descendants, the institution grew into a four-year liberal arts college and was renamed Voorhees University in 2022 after achieving university status. It has long been known for its close-knit community, its mission of uplifting underserved students, and its historical ties to the Episcopal Church.
